View All Critic Reviews Jun 27, The film is more than the sum of its parts, because the grand impact of a three-hour epic overshadows individual segments that are long on atmosphere but a bit thin on plot.

Really, one could summarize any of the premises in a sentence. Man dumps loving wife for woman from more prestigious family, has second thoughts and returns to first wife with unexpected results.

Man saved from snowstorm death by mysterious woman, draws her wrath after breaking promise not to tell others. Blind man recruited to sing traditional ballads for a ghost army, has trouble backing out.

Man magically sees another man's face in his tea, makes the mistake of wronging him. Simple tales, told with beautiful cinematography and sets.

The film is entirely shot inside a studio -- even battle scenes on a lake -- and Kobayashi has great fun concocting impossible, painterly skies.

Most memorably, "Woman of the Snow" even adds giant, ominous eyes hanging in the background. Eric B Super Reviewer. Jun 13, A collection of short horror films that are done with style and grace and make up for the small budgets associated with them.

The first of the four short films is called Black Hair and is about a samurai who leaves his wife in order to marry and move up the social ladder and is driven mad in the end when he finally comes back home and discovers his wife is dead but her spirit still lingers at night.

The second story is called The Woman of the Snow and is about a man who must keep his oath to a spirit in order to save his life.

The film is happy and it isn't until he breaks his oath that everything crumbles apart. The third film is called Hoichi the Earless and the title says it all.

The blind protagonist is summoned by spirits to play his instrument, in which he is highly skilled at, and comes under a curse until his friends try and save him.

The final of the four films is called In a Cup of Tea and is about a spirit who is seen in this cup and what the consequences are for drinking the spirit.

These are visually quite impressive, especially The Woman of the Snow and Hoichi the Earless and are very atmospheric and traditional Japanese Horror.

Jul 03, Four supernatural Japanese folk tales: a samurai is haunted by regret when he leaves his poor wife for a rich one; a snow-spirit spares the life of a young man on one condition; ghosts demand a blind harpist perform for them; a man sees an apparition in a cup of water.

Slow, beautiful, hypnotic, poetic; eye-popping sets and masterfully eerie music. A masterpiece. Greg S Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews.

Edit Did You Know? Trivia In order to achieve an appropriate separation between the four parts of the film, director Masaki Kobayashi shot the film on two separate sound stages.

Because of the tight shooting schedule, he would oversee the set design of one vignette on one sound stage while he filmed another on the alternate location.

Goofs In the last scene, spotlight falls on a cup of tea which lies on a floor, farther from other cutlery set items, but in the scene before, the cup was lying right next to a wooden tea tray.

The popularity of the game, as well as the acquisition of a printing press , led to the creation of a literary genre called kaidanshu.

Kaidanshu were originally based on older Buddhist stories of a didactic nature, although the moral lessons soon gave way to the demand for strange and gruesome stories.

The spelling kwaidan is a romanization based on an archaic spelling of the word in kana - Hearn used it since the stories in the book were equally archaic.

The revised Hepburn romanization system is spelled kaidan. When film director Masaki Kobayashi made his anthology film Kwaidan from Hearn's translated tales, the old spelling was used in the English title.

Originally based on didactic Buddhist tales, kaidan often involve elements of karma , and especially ghostly vengeance for misdeeds.

This vengeance is usually specifically targeted against the tormentor, but can sometimes be a general hatred toward all living humans.

This untargeted wrath can be seen in Furisode , a story in Hearn's book In Ghostly Japan about a cursed kimono that kills everyone who wears it.

This motif is repeated in the film Ring with a videotape that kills all who watch it, and the film franchise Ju-on with a house that kills all who enter it.

Director: Masaki Kobayashi. Added to Watchlist. The two happily exchange wonderful stories about the past and the future until the swordsman falls asleep.

He wakes up the following day only to discover that he had been sleeping next to his ex-wife's rotted corpse. Rapidly aging, he stumbles through the house, finding that it actually is in ruins and overgrown with weeds.

Two woodcutters named Minokichi and Mosaku take refuge in a fisherman's hut during a snowstorm. Mosaku is killed by a Yuki-onna.

When the Yukionna turns to Minokichi she remarks that he is a handsome boy and takes pity by sparing him because of his youth. The Yuki-onna warns him to never mention what happened or she will kill him.

Minokichi returns home and never mentions that night. One day while cutting wood he comes across Yuki, a beautiful young woman.

She tells him that she is on her way to Edo, as she lost her family and has relatives there who can secure her a job as a lady-in-waiting. Minokichi offers to let her spend the night at his house with his mother.

The mother takes a liking to Yuki and asks her to stay. She never leaves for Edo and Minokichi falls in love with her.

The two marry and have children, living happily. The older women in the town are in awe over Yuki maintaining her youth even after having three children.

One night, Minokichi gives Yuki a set of sandals he has made. She is stitching a kimono in the candlelight. In the light, Minokichi recalls the Yuki-onna and see a resemblance between them.

He tells her about the strange encounter. It is then that Yuki reveals herself to be the Yuki-onna and a snowstorm comes over the home.

Despite the fact he broke his word, she refrains from killing him because of their children. Yuki then leaves Minokichi with the children, warning him to treat them well or she will return and kill him.

She disappears into the snowstorm, leaving Minokichi heartbroken. Minokichi places her sandals outside in the snow, and after he goes back inside, they disappear as Yuki accepts them.

Hoichi is a young blind musician who plays the biwa. His specialty is singing the chant of The Tale of the Heike about the Battle of Dan-no-ura fought between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the last phase of the Genpei War.

Hoichi is an attendant at a temple and is looked after the others there. One night he hears a sound and decides to play his instrument in the garden courtyard.

A spectral samurai appears and tells him that his lord wishes to have a performance at his house. The samurai leads Hoichi to mysterious and ancient court.

Another attendant notices that he went missing for the night as his dinner was not touched. The samurai re-appears on the next night to take Hoichi and affirms that he has not told anyone.

Afterwards, the priest asks Hoichi why he goes out at night but Hoichi won't tell him. One night, Hoichi leaves in a storm and his friends follow him and discover he has been going to a graveyard and reciting the Tale of Heike to the court of the dead Emperor.

Hoichi informs the court that it takes many nights to chant the entire epic. They direct him to chant the final battle - the battle of Dan-no-ura.

His friends drag him home as he refuses to leave before his performance is completed. The priest tell Hoichi he is in great danger and that this was a vast illusion from the spirit of the dead.

They tell Hoichi that if he obeys them again they will tear him to pieces. The samurai re-appears and calls out for Hoichi. Hoichi does not answer.
